BATHYMETRY AS DESIGN TOOL

TFG has added a new data collection system to its lake rehabilitation design toolbox. The SonarM8 bathymetric survey system, manufactured by Seafloor Systems, Inc., expands TFG’s data collection capabilities. TFG has been using bathymetric survey equipment for the past 10 years but recently upgraded to the SonarM8 system to more quickly mobilize on survey efforts and provide more comprehensive lake rehabilitation design services.

The SonarM8 bathymetric equipment is synced to a GPS survey system. In conjunction with shoreline topographic survey, TFG can provide complete lake mapping services to meet numerous client needs.

SONAR M8

Fully integrated with GPS equipment, the SonarM8 Digital Survey Echosounder allows TFG staff to collect and view bathymetric data in real time with a boat mounted laptop and Seafloor Systems software. The SonarM8 unit projects a 4-degree width sonar beam from a boat-mounted transducer with a depth range of 0.3m to 75m (1-250ft) and accuracy of 0.01m/0.1% of depth.

RAW DATA ANALYSIS

After bathymetric data is collected with the SonarM8, TFG staff analyze and interpret the data and create comprehensive lake maps with AutoCAD design, drafting and engineering software. The lake contour maps can be used by lake managers, anglers, and other lake recreationists.

SONAR VISTA SOFTWARE

The Sonar Vista software filters sonar data collected at 1 second intervals. This software facilitates identifcation and removal of erroneaus data caused by vegetation or interference. By integrating data analysis with Leica GPS survey equipment, sub-centimeter accuracy can be attained. This enables coordinate data to be projected in any coordinate system.
