About Our Name

Ni (water) + bthaska (flat)

The state of Nebraska’s name is derived from an Omaha Indian name meaning “flat water”. The name was given by the Indians to the Platte River because it is a broad, shallow body of water.

Founded in 2000, The Flatwater Group adopted this name to illustrate our commitment to protect water as a natural resource and to provide broad based solutions to water issues with local knowledge and expertise.
